Mindfulness provides physicians with a portable toolkit of practical skills for self-care and patient care. For over 40 years, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) has been the worldwide “gold standard” to which other mindfulness courses are compared. The full curriculum is 30 hours over 8 weeks. Dr Patterson has delivered the 8 week course 34 times in the last 10 years for UK Health and Wellness. This 4 hour class is for members of the Lexington Medical Society and is limited to 15 physicians. It is an experiential orientation to the basic MBSR skill set.
Mindfulness enhances mental focus and clarity despite the pressure of medical practice. It helps physicians listen more carefully and compassionately to patients, and approach problems in a fresh, open-minded way, It can help counteract the worrying, perfectionism and self-judgment that are so common among doctors. Mindfulness can help avoid or reverse burnout and improve well-being..
